Product Design

The FlangeBand Sealing System promotes a menu of three key components:

1. The Sealux Strip Membrane

2. A Foam Backer Rod

3. Sealux-N Silicone or equivalent

The Sealux Strip is a 4″ (100mm) wide, 0.0197″ (0.5mm) thick waterproof membrane. The strip is part fleeced to provide mechanical adhesion with approved sealant adhesives, thin set mortars and liquid applied waterproofing compounds.

The strip is revolutionary in design not just because it has a fleece-free red tinged surface (a) that provides a tenacious adhesion with Sealux-N silicone (or equivalent), but the strip is also reversible making it a versatile sealing solution that can be installed either during or after the installation of tubs and shower bases with and without tile flanges attached.

When the strip is installed to seal a shower base or bathtub with an integral tile flange, the red tinged surface (a) of the strip faces the tile flange. When the strip is installed to seal a shower base or bathtub with no tiling flange, the red tinged surface faces the installer.

The Foam Backer Rod is an adhesive backed 1/4″ x 1/2″ (6mm x 12mm) closed cell foam material. The backer rod is installed when sealing shower bases and tubs with no tile flange. The purpose of the backer rod is to ensure the silicone depth inside the joint will not restrict the necessary stretching required to accommodate joint expansion.

Sealux-N Silicone is a neutral curing sanitary grade low modulus silicone that has been tested and approved for installation with all Sealux Sealing Systems. Sealux-N is highly elastic and capable of tenacious adhesion with the red tinged portion of the Sealux strip.

Sealux-N conforms to ASTM-C920 recommendations.

Design: We believe the dual use of the Sealux strip, with or without backer rod in combination with Sealux-N silicone (or equivalent), delivers a joint sealing assembly that is superior to all other tub and shower base joint seals in respect of: material composition, installation versatility and product performance.

Construction Standards: Construction codes of practice worldwide adopt the same proven principles in respect of sealing movement joints in shower environments. Issues covering sealant selection, the use of a backer rod and the need for joint substrate preparation to enhance sealant adhesion are accepted principals innovatively addressed in FlangeBand’s unique design.

Product Performance

Three frequent causes of joint seal failure around shower bases and bathtubs are a combination of:

Problem 1: The sealant bridge between the wall tile and receptor splits under the effects of joint expansion and the joint leaks. Joint sealant between the tile and receptor cannot be relied upon to remain waterproof without periodic inspection, maintenance and replacement to prevent consequential damage. For this reason the joint itself is often referred to as a ‘maintenance joint’. Unfortunately, in many cases it is the notice of a leak that instigates joint inspection at which time it is already too late because the damage is done!

Solution: Don’t rely on joint sealant between the tile and receptor as the exclusive means of waterproofing the joint. Install FlangeBand as a permanent secondary movement joint seal behind the exposed tile/receptor joint sealant.


Problem 2: Joint sealant between the tile and receptor naturally deteriorates under frequent exposure to the chemicals and physical weathering in modern shower environments. Sealant deterioration is another cause leaks.

Solution: FlangeBand is designed to conceal and protect the silicone from direct exposure to the deteriorating effects shower environments. Once installed, FlangeBand delivers a permanent watertight maintenance-free joint seal.


Problem 3: Under the effects of joint expansion, sealant between the tile and receptor can suffer a loss of adhesion with the receptor or tile resulting in water leaks and wicking.

Solution: The Sealux strip has a red tinged surface specially primed for tenacious adhesion with Sealux-N silicone. When FlangeBand is installed to seal a tub or shower base with or without a tile flange, tenacious adhesion between strip and silicone, flexibility in the Sealux-N silicone and elasticity in the Sealux strip collectively accommodate the joint expansion and maintain seal integrity.


Conclusion: Installing FlangeBand as a permanent secondary concealed movement joint seal behind the exposed tile/receptor joint sealant ensures that when the sealant joint between the tile and receptor fails, the resulting leak is contained inside the shower area.
